Flamig Farm in West Simsbury, CT
7 Shingle Mill Road, West Simsbury, CT 860-658-5070
I’m trying to enjoy the nice fall weather now before winter keeps us inside for several months. Our most recent adventure was to Flamig Farm in West Simsbury, CT. It’s a petting zoo with a large selection of animals, hayrides, country store, preschool classes, birthday parties, and field trips. Their scenic daytime hayrides and haunted hayrides were featured in 50 family-friendly fall activities in CT.
The farm is stroller-friendly but there is a bit of a hill to climb from the parking lot to the petting zoo. Once you get up the hill the rest of the area is easy to navigate.
When you first come to the farm there is a window to purchase admission. The fee for the petting zoo is $5 per person. It’s free for children under 1 and adults over 80. A cup of grain to feed the animals is $1 per cup. They accept cash and credit card. They also offer a season pass for the petting zoo for $100.
You can also pay for admission inside the country store. On the day we went they had month old kittens that you could visit. The farm has several dogs and cats that roam freely around the property.
The petting zoo is large enough to give you something to do for the afternoon but not to large that it’s exhausting for little kids.
The petting zoo animals were grouped together by breed in large fenced in areas. We got to see horses, donkeys, ponies, llamas, alpacas, pigs, sheep, goats, a cow, ducks, peacocks, an emu, and lots of chickens.
We were able to feed all of the animals but the ponies and horses (signs are posted). We were instructed to put the grain out on the palm of your hand and keep it out straight. Other animals, like chickens and pigs, we threw in some grain. We enjoyed visiting with the animals, petting and feeling them.
On the weekends and during some holidays, the farm offers pony rides. The fee to ride the pony is $5 per person.
There are sinks outside to wash your hands.
There are several covered picnic tables where you can enjoy a lunch from home.
The farm also has a room for birthday parties. You can even have a staycation at the farm.
We had a great time at Flamig Farm. I love introducing my kids to new places and teaching them to respect animals. It’s a great place to enjoy animals and nature with the whole family.
