Boscov’s Department Store Comes to CT

Disclosure: I was invited to visit the Boscov’s store and received compensation to use in-store. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

The new Boscov’s department store at the Westfield Meriden Mall had its grand opening on October 10th and 11th. The Meriden location is the first store in Connecticut and first in New England. They currently have 44 stores in 7 states throughout the country. Boscov’s is the largest family owned department store in the country.

The new store spans two floors in the Meriden Mall. It replaces the old JCPenney that closed a few years ago.

This was my first time ever exploring a Boscov’s store and I was pleasantly surprised. It’s a mix between Macy’s, JCPenney, and Kohl’s. They offer brand-name clothing, shoes, accessories, makeup, home decor and furniture. There is an eye glass center, auditorium for community events, and homemade fudge. There is also free gift wrapping every day of the week!

During my shopping trip, I was able to get a few new pieces for the kids, a gift for a friend, and some sparkly new shoes and accessories for myself. I even grabbed a few things to put away for future Christmas presents. They have a huge selection at all different price points. This will be a great place to stop for holiday gifts.

I focused a large part of my shopping trip in the kids department. They carried a large selection of Carters and Osh Kosh clothes but also had unique pieces. They had decent toy selection (on scale or larger than Kohl’s) also a small selection of baby furniture and strollers.

I brought along my kids for a second peek at the store and was able to navigate the aisle with my stroller. There are restrooms located within the store which is always good for frequent potty breaks, but I was disappointed that there weren’t family bathrooms (there are some located in the mall). There was a changing area inside the ladies room.

I thought that the prices were very good in the store. Unlike some other department stores, Boscov’s does not use coupons. The sale price is the price for everyone, so there isn’t the frustration of forgetting your coupons at home. They also have crazy prices within each section of the store that had great prices on staple items. I scored a new pashmina that I could use as a shawl or scarf for $2.99!

One of the things that sets Boscov’s apart from other department stores is their influence on the local community. They focus their efforts on a smaller base that impacts the community around the store. The opening of the this new store has brought more than 300 jobs to Connecticut.
